The Story of the Twenty-two Major Arcana.
By Roger Fleet
The King had been away for a whole week on a hunting trip designed to impress his guest the Count of Tripoli. However things had not gone as he had intended, instead of a good impression he had been made to seem a fool by being found in a compromising situation with a young boy from the Count’s entourage. Life seems a strange journey at times mussed the King, not knowing what would happen next.
But, as if by magic the next day at breakfast one of the Count’s friends who was a magician explained to everyone that it was actually his fault. He said that he had been trying to demonstrate a disappearing trick using the boy as the subject, but instead of the boy disappearing, it was he the magician who had disappeared. At this the boy had got frightened, and the King was just giving him a hug to comfort him, when in came a courtier who misread the situation. It was a moment of transformation for the atmosphere changed immediately, the babble of conversation returned, and restored normality to the gathering. The King gave a sigh of relief at his great change of fortune.
Yet only a short time later things took another turn when the Magician’s wife who was a pagan priestess turned up to confront her husband with his deception. She explained to him in no uncertain terms that what had been covered over the Gods wanted exposed, so that it could be dealt with and a true balance restored. As this new facet of the situation became common knowledge a fresh gloom settled over the whole camp as it started to pack for its return to the castle the next day.

The King travelled homeward as though to his own execution, aware that the hunting trip had not worked out as he had planned, in fact it had revealed a side of himself that he had not been aware of. Upon arrival at the castle there was an atmosphere of excitement very evident, the Queen was at her window waving gaily to the King who found it hard to smile and return her wave. His heart was heavy with foreboding at the coming meeting. As he climbed the stairs to the royal chamber his feet dragged on each step, then suddenly the door at the top of the stairs was thrown open and the Queen came running down to meet him. He stood motionless not knowing how to begin; she put her arms around his neck, kissed him on the cheek and burst out with the good news that she was pregnant with their first child. He remained motionless not wishing to break the Queens good mood with his revelation from the hunting trip. She turned him around and taking his arm guided him to their private chamber, understanding his silence to be surprise at their good news. Once there he burst out with all that had happened, unable to contain it any longer, but his fears were not realized as the Queen was so overjoyed at their good news that she was not concerned with the Kings moment of weakness. So they both decided to throw a banquet to celebrate their good fortune, the King amazed at the Queens attitude to what had happened. That night he lay with the Queen in his arms, not believing his good fortune with such a lovely woman in his life.

In the morning a messenger arrived from the Queens father, he told them that a bishop was turning up with her father later that day. This was a surprise as he did not usually turn up at such short notice, and he was such a lecher that he would never travel with a bishop. The King asked the Queen if she knew what the visit was about, but as she had not even mentioned the baby she did not understand why he was coming with so little warning. When they arrived one look at their faces showed that it was not going to be a pleasant visit, they both had dark expressions on their faces. The Kings heart sank and he felt that they had somehow heard of his foolish encounter with the boy. Her father asked if they could have a private audience with the King and Queen. Once alone he immediately turned to the King and asked why he had to have such a perverse relationship with a boy, if he wanted some fun why had he not taken a mistress or even two. Why the shame of a boy? At this point the bishop spoke up saying it was not just the perversion that mattered, any relationship outside of marriage was wrong, but that this sin would separate the King from God. Did the King not understand the seriousness of his position? At this point the Queen spoke in defence of her husband, she was happy that all was now right again between them, and that was the only thing that mattered to them and to God as well. The bishop quickly stepped forward and started quoting the Bible to them, telling them that such a mortal sin would affect the Kings reign. God could not bless such a wicked sovereign; his power would be severely curtailed from this point. Then he turned to the Queen and told her that she was not seeing things in the right way, she should be condemning the Kings actions not supporting him. The debate went on for more than an hour getting more and more heated as time went on, when they eventually finished not only had everyone in the castle heard about the situation, but the King and Queen did not just have a cloud hanging over them it had now come between them. The joy of the previous night had disappeared and they retired to their separate chambers.

The next day at court as the King is hearing different cases brought before him, he could not concentrate. As he sat on his throne with the crown on his head and all the trappings of power around him, he had to admit quietly to himself that he felt totally powerless over his own life, how could he move on from this place? His courage had deserted him; he had the power of life and death over all his subjects. Yet, with his own life he just did not know how to move forward, which direction to move now
was a mystery. That evening as the King sat in his chamber trying to read the Bible passages that the bishop had set him to study, so that he would realize the seriousness of his position before God and seek His forgiveness. The King realized that what he really needed was strength; he needed to be like Daniel in the lions den, when Daniel shut the mouths of the lions and was not harmed. It was then that he knew what he must do; he would go into seclusion at the local monastery to seek the inner power to overcome his weaknesses. This he knew would not only restore himself, but also restore the power to his throne, which is where it had once been.

A month had passed with the King in total isolation at the monastery, having only bread and water to satisfy his needs. The servants where not allowed to do anything for him and he did not even bathe. Then out of the blue one morning a messenger arrived from the Queen, her letter was given to the King. He stood holding the letter wondering what was within; his hands shook as he opened it and read,
I love you my darling husband,
please come home so that we
can again be lovers, as we were
before you went away.
The Kings heart soared! He realized that the wheel had again turned and returned his true love to his side.

The King returned home to the castle, and was immediately met by the Queen. At once she suggested that they be alone, the King agreed and they go to the royal apartment. When they where alone she put her arms around him and kissed him passionately, then asked for his forgiveness for listening to her father and the bishop. They where both crying as he led her to a seat. Once she had sat down he knelt at her feet asking for her forgiveness for his weakness and betrayal of her trust. She took his face in her hands and kissed him on the forehead telling him that she at least thought he was a wonderful man. Justice has been worked out and you are again in my arms said the King as he hugged his wife. That day messengers where sent to both the Queens father and the bishop telling them the good news of their restoration to each other and that they needed no further interference from either of them. They had to wait three long weeks before the replies came but both reluctantly accepted the situation, in view of the Kings repentance and therefore his restoration to God. The situation had passed out of their lives and they decided to make it as though it had never happened by never ever mentioning it again.

For the next week the King lived in the Queens chamber only leaving for as short a time as possible each day to deal with the business of court. The love of their early years was rekindled and they looked forward to the birth of their first child. They agreed between themselves that they would put their relationship at the centre of their lives in the future and unless absolutely unavoidable to be apart. It was a long time before they had to be parted again, but it happened to be that the neighbouring kingdom wanted to negotiate a long term peace treaty with the King in person. The King could not refuse as he had been trying to get this agreement for some years, because together they would be able to field a larger army than all the other local kingdoms he hoped that it would bring lasting peace and prosperity to the area.

However, the day that the King and all his entourage left there was a terrible accident in the kitchen. The young maid that looked after the Queens bath was scalded to death; it was a tragedy for the girl’s family. Yet, the next day they insisted on sending her young sister to be a replacement maid for the Queen. In truth they felt that they gained status by having a daughter serve as a private maid to the Queen and did not want to loose that position. Although she was only thirteen years old she was sensible and a pretty little girl. The Queen was upset at the loose of her maid but was quickly won over to her sister who was very
charming and willing to please. On the girls third night the Queen could not sleep and so called for the maid to brush her hair to help her relax, as the girl was busy brushing she sensed the tension in the Queen and offered to rub her neck once she had finished with her hair. The Queen who was used to such things just said, ‘yes’, but when the girl started to massage scented oil into her neck and shoulders her touch seemed almost magical. It was late that night when the Queen sent the girl back to her room; she retired at once feeling relaxed and fell asleep immediately. That night she dreamt of the girl and her lovely ways, when she awoke there was complete understanding of how the King must have felt all those months ago, alone and in need of love. She resolved to tell the King upon his return, that now she could understand how the loneliness of being separated can leave one open to temptation.

Two days later the King returned, he was not happy with the way things had gone at the negotiations. Although he had worked hard to bring about the treaty it was not easy when the other kingdom is four times bigger and with six times the population of your own kingdom. That evening after sharing all that had happened with his court the King retired to his chamber. The Queen joined him immediately, knowing that he was tired and melancholy. She decided to entertain him with the story of her new maid and the understanding that had come while the King was away. For some time he listened in polite silence but his mind was not really focused on what the Queen was saying. It was however too much when she said that it had given her insight into how the King could have had such strong feelings for the servant boy. The King jumped up in his anger and as he did so the table was overturned, ‘did the Queen not learn about the dangers of such things from the past’. ‘Was the Queen totally stupid?’ In her anger she retorted, ‘did he not realize that the Queen was human just as he was’. One thing led to another and after some time the Queen left to pack her bags. Even though it was late she insisted on leaving that night although it was already dark. The Queen took with her two older maids to look after her on the long journey to her parent’s home. But just ten minutes into the journey the coach hit a boulder and the Queen was thrown against the side of the coach. She knew at once that the child within her was hurt, but her anger was such that she continued on the long journey rather than turn back. The drive had taken all night and by the time the coach drew up outside the great house she was already in labour. An hour later the child was still born, she knew that never again would her world be the same. She cried with great sobs of distress that her whole world had crashed to the ground at her feet. She continued to cry until she eventually fell asleep not knowing what was to become of her in the future.

At first light the Queens father sent a messenger to inform the king what had happened. Now he found that he had great sympathy for the King’s situation, the responsibility of keeping peace for the country on his shoulders as well as a pregnant wife to love and care for, not easy things to balance in life. He resolved to talk to his daughter as soon as she had recovered from the immediate shock of loosing the baby. This situation he still believed with a sure hope would work out well.
The messenger arrived at the castle before lunch and was immediately taken to the king. The King felt terrible, he had not slept, could not eat and had spent most of the morning pacing up and down waiting for some news of the queen. However, NOW the messenger stood before him he could feel the tension building up even more within him, he so wanted the news to be good! He told the messenger to convey his message, the king listened in silence, he waved the man away when he had finished unable to speak. Thank God the Queen was safe, now he knew where she was and that she was in good hands. But overwhelmed by emotions he just sat with his head in his hands and wept at the loss of their first son. Sometime past without him being disturbed, but then a servant arrived asking if the King required anything. ‘Such as what? He snapped, regretting his response immediately. The servant continued, ‘the Master of Horse wondered if you might require a coach, or some horses got ready so that you could go to the queen your majesty’. The servant spoke in an even tone, the Kings moods where his own affair, he had long ago learned not to get drawn into them. For a moment the King looked at the servant as though he was the most foolish of men, but the King could not help noticing that the servant stood erect and unmoved by all that was going on around him. The King would have liked to shout at the servant wanting to vent some of his anger at someone, BUT, deep within he sensed that this calm and trusted servant was showing him what he should do. ‘Yes, yes get six horses prepared at once, Sir Oswald and an escort of four guards will come with me, if we hurry we can still make it before dark’.
Within the hour they had left the castle and set a blazing pace in their race with the Sun to arrive before darkness fell. As soon as they arrived the King was taken to see the Queen, one look at the sadness upon her face and he could not hold back the tears. He rushed to the couch and kneeling beside it took her in his arms, united in their grief. After some time the King shared his sorrows at the way he had behaved the previous day. But the Queen was not blaming him, it was all her fault, if she had not stormed out so late in the day, and if she had taken the advice given and turned back after the accident things could have been different. In fact she was amazed to see the King at all, especially with him not wanting to blame her for what had happened. The Kings heart seemed to beat to the rhythm of her words, he felt so in love with her. At once he decided to take her away for a whole month to their country retreat, and that he would look after her himself. As he spoke it was as though the sun had come out deep within her, and she felt such gratitude to God for such a lovely husband.
The King left his wife to rest and went to see her father; they sat and talked for a long time. The King shared all his feelings about what had happened and how he felt such guilt about it. After a long discussion the queen’s father felt for the first time that he understood the King. He counselled the King to put everything that had happened behind him, and to not allow it to affect the future. They continued to talk late into the night, sorting out in the kings mind exactly what he should do.

In the morning when the Queen awoke she found the King sitting at the bottom of her bed waiting to share all that he had planned for them. Having shared all that he had arranged with her father last night, he kissed her saying that life would be very different from now on. She just smiled because she knew that this time it was going to be alright. As the King was leaving he turned saying, ‘funny how things turn out. It started with a hunting trip and has ended with a second honeymoon, yet through it all we have grown closer and stronger.’ The Queen smiled, ‘yes’, she said, ‘we have completed a hard time, but we won through to the end.’ The King laughed and replied, ‘my father always used to say –
To the victor belong the spoils!’
