Majestic in form and stature, growing to a height of between 1.2m to 2.5m with a spread of up to 1.1m, its easy to see how it came to be named. Indigenous to Europe and north America, related to our native woodland & smaller Angelica sylvestris, its been cultivated in the British Isles since the 16th century. It’s a biennial and short-lived perennial, self-seeding readily.
It’s blessed with many distinctive features and all parts are scented, particularly the roots, with a musky, juniper type fragrance. Its bright green leaves are large, pinnate, lobed and toothed, up to a metre long, the leaf stalks sheathing the stems.
Best known & still in main-stream, common use are its thick, ridged and hollow stems of a purplish green hue - candied for culinary use.
A king among late summer flowerers, its yellowish green umbels of tiny, rounded clustering flowers are its crowning, garden glory and a beauty to behold.
- Cultivation - Divide roots / take cuttings in spring, collect seed when ripe (pale yellow, ribbed, 6mm long) in autumn, sow autumn / spring
- Garden Use - Partial shade, needs a large space, back of border,clumps as focal points
- Harvesting – In spring, before flowering - for herb collect stems & leaves; extract resin from cuts stems & rootcrowns; before frosts collect root after 2 – 3 years growth
- Angelica Incense – Dry root, bruise it, infuse in wine vinegarfor 4 – 5 days, burn on charcoal
